CITROEN GS
50 years of
the GS in 2020; showing just under 33,000 kilometres; spent most of life in
Spanish garage; regularly maintained; currently registered in Spain with UK NOVA
details
Celebrating
its 50th Birthday this year (it was one of the featured cars at this year’s
Retromobile show in Paris), the GS was voted European Car of the Year in 1971.
It was probably the most technologically advanced car in its class with superior
comfort, safety and aerodynamics to any of its rivals.
This 1977 GS
was assembled at Citröen’s Vigo factory in Spain and still has its Spanish
registration. There is some uncertainty over whether it is in basic ‘Club’ or
more upmarket ‘Palas’ specification (which could be a Spanish variation on the
French ‘Pallas’ spec.) but there is no denying it is in very fine condition.
Rust has carried away the majority of UK-domiciled cars and it is believed there
are fewer than 20 still on the road.
It registers
just 33,000km on the odometer, although there is no way of telling how many kms
it has actually covered over the last 43 years. It comes with its original
Spanish logbook, MOT equivalent papers back to 1997 (including the current
certificate which runs to April 2020), handbook, import papers and a NOVA
number, which will greatly simplify registration in this country.
This 1977 GS
is in remarkably good condition and very stylish in its understated grey
paintwork. It has been driven around the site at Brightwells, the engine
sounding as it should along with the gears and brakes. The suspension raises and
falls and the interior is in very good condition. The only issue we found was
the interior door handle on the driver's side needs sorting. Hard to believe
that the concept is 50 years old this year and thanks to the Spanish climate, it
is hard to believe this one is 43 years old
too.
