1989 Toyota Supra MkIII
Unusually smart and
original example of this sporting Japanese classic; 73,500 miles with 21
services to date; four new Avon tyres; hard to find in this condition
A descendant of the legendary 2000GT of the Sixties, the
Supra was launched in 1978 as the sporting GT flagship of the Toyota range and
just got better as time went on.
The A70 MkIII version ran from 1986 until 1993 with a
potent 200bhp 3.0 straight-six up front driving the rear wheels in proper
sportscar fashion. Most cars had 4-speed automatic transmission but a 5-speed
manual was also available to make the most of all those eager horses. Naturally
Toyota’s famed reliability came as standard and these cars can cover starship
mileages with ease.
Supplied new by HCS Toyota of Portsmouth in October 1989,
this smart Supra 3.0i has covered only 73,500 miles with an impressive service
history comprising 20 stamps in the book up to 66,827 miles in January 2009 plus
a note of another service in May 2012 at 69,116 miles when the head gasket was
also renewed. This gives an average service interval of just 3,500 miles.
In October 2016 at 71,000 miles it had a brake overhaul,
new starter motor and new rear struts with KYB shock absorbers and new rear roll
bar bushes and brackets. In December 2018 four new Avon ZV7 tyres were fitted
since when the car has covered only 800 miles.
The original Super White paintwork is still nice and
shiny, the only blemish of any note being a scuff on the left corner of the rear
bumper. The blue velour interior is in excellent shape, as you can see in the
photos. In true Japanese fashion it is packed full of features which were
cutting-edge for their time including an automatic gearbox with overdrive and
ECT power boost functions; cruise control; air con and inflatable lumbar support
pads in the seats.
Starting promptly and driving nicely as we have moved it
around on site, it has an MOT until January 2022 with just two minor advisories
for slight play in both front lower ball joints. There are also nine old MOTs
back to 2009 at 66,828 miles. One of only around 300 MkIII Supras still
registered in the UK today, this unusually original and well-maintained example
looks mighty tempting at the sensible guide price suggested.
