2000 Hawk 289
Very nicely constructed 289
Replica; lots of detail; driven 30+ miles to the sale; ready for immediate
use
The vendor of this car purchased a comprehensive GRP Hawk 289
kit from Gerry Hawkridge in 2000 and spent a solid eight weeks in the
workshop producing this extremely well-executed example on offer
today.
Supplied complete with an MGB rear axle, the engine and gearbox
were sourced from Progress Engineering in Maidstone, who turned out a fully
overhauled 3.9-litre block with new liners, pistons, big end and main bearings,
cam bearings, high-torque cam and lifters - all fully balanced. They added
an SD1 water pump, lightened flywheel, Stage II heads and a Mallory twin-point
dizzy - and a fully rebuilt gear box which added up to a bill of
£4,177.44.
All of the other build bills remain on file, along with
the Hawk-supplied construction manual and wiring diagram. This shows quality
fittings thoughout, which include smart fitted carpets, leather bucket seats,
correct instruments (all working) and a hood and sidescreens.
Painted in
a most attractive BRG with a mild metallic finish, the car looks very neat
and purposeful and remains in very smart order. The vendor has supplied a set of
over-riders which he has never fitted and a quality car cover too. It passed its
SVA test on the 8th September 2000 and is listed on its V5C as an Historic
Vehicle which exempts it from tax and MOTs. It does however have a
current MOT which expires in September 2021 and 13 old MOTs showing
how the current reading of some 16,500 miles has accumulated.
It is
fitted with an immobiliser and rear mounted amplifier and speakers which are
somewhat superfluous given the lovely noise it makes through its stainless
pipes. It is ready to go and was driven around 30 miles to the sale.
It
is extremely well presented and is a credit to the owner who has assembled it.
Underneath, the powder coating has lifted from a few areas on the
outriggers which was pointed out to us by the vendor. This simply requires some
light treatment which would be very easy to do.
This is undoubtedly a
very well sorted and genuine Hawk which is on offer for the less the cost of
building one yourself these days. Really - why would you go to all that
bother when you can drive this one home!
