1995 Mercedes-Benz E220 Cabriolet (W124)
From
a deceased estate; only 63,900 miles; Sportline spec; electric hood; current
owner nine years; very tidy all round
Launched in 1987 and remaining in production until 1997,
the Mercedes-Benz E-Class (W124 Series) is widely recognised as the last of the
'over-engineered' Mercedes models before cost-cutting began to erode the
marque's once impregnable reputation for money-no-object design.
Available in saloon, estate, coupe and convertible guises
with a bewildering array of petrol and diesel engine options, it was most
elegant in the cabriolet form you see here. Beautifully balanced and equipped
with Mercedes' superlatively sure-footed multi-link rear suspension, it had
nicely weighted power-assisted steering and excellent disc brakes.
Introduced in 1993, the 220 Cabriolet used a 2.2-litre
straight-four 16-valve engine producing 148bhp and 155lb/ft of torque which gave
the car a top speed of 130mph. Very expensive when new and with something of a
cult following today, W124 owners tend to hang onto them for years.
Supplied new by Evans of Milton Keynes in March 1996, this
smart E220 Cabriolet has covered only 63,900 miles from new and has been in the
current ownership since 2012. Fitted with the desirable Sportline options which
noticeably firmed up the steering and suspension, it is finished in Tourmaline
Green with a beige hide interior and has an electric soft top which functions as
it should with a wind deflector to stop your toupee blowing off when the hood is
down.
The original bookpack is present, the service book showing
six stamps up to 34,388 miles in 2008. On offer here from a deceased estate, it
is one of many classic cars owned by the vendor and we are told that it will
have been properly looked after during his 9-year ownership but there are no
bills to support this and an online MOT check shows that it has barely covered
4,000 miles in the last 15 years.
Starting promptly and running very quietly as we have
moved it around on site, it has an MOT until May 2022 with just one advisory:
'coil springs corroded'. With just the odd minor scratch here and there, it is
generally very presentable and will doubtless keep on keeping on until we are
all long gone. These W124 Mercs may not be the most exciting cars to drive but
the build quality is astounding and a good one will last you for life.
