2003 Volkswagen Beetle Ultima
One of the last
Beetles to be built in Mexico; owned by lifetime Beetle specialist and founder
of The Mexican Brazilian Beetle Register, Howard Cheese of Ludlow; only showing
16,000 kilometres; left hand drive
When
we say this is one of the last Beetles to be produced, we mean it – this Beetle
is in fact number 21,528,736 of the 21,529,464 ever produced. The 1,600cc Ultima
‘Final’ Edicion Beetle was kept to a production of only 3,000 and supplied in
only two colours, Harvest Moon Beige and Aquarius Blue, WX53 EFK being the
latter of course.
Many
of the Beetling community will know the car and of course will know the owner;
lifetime Beetle enthusiast, chairman and founder of the MBBR, Howard Cheese, who
sadly passed away last year. Howard owned this car since purchasing it new in
2003 with only 141 delivery kilometres from Beetles (UK) Ltd in Gloucestershire
who imported it from Mexico.
Since
purchasing the car, Howard kept an entire record of every turn of the wheel,
having now covered just 16,030km in total. We understand that many enthusiasts
consider this to be one of the best Ultima examples currently in the UK and
those that knew Howard, will know how well he looked after his cars over the
years. Put through an MOT almost every year of its life, it had its gearbox
removed and re-conditioned in 2007 after only 6500 kilometers. A meticulous file
of paperwork accompanies the car from the day it was purchased up until a week
before this auction.
Presenting
incredibly well on the original white wall tyres, this Beetle has been used
specifically for local and national shows at Tatton Park, Stanford Hall etc and
the occasional long run to Scotland and back. The log that Howard kept records
every activity until 16,023 kilometres, when it was recently put through an MOT
before being delivered to us. Not surprisingly, there were no
advisories.
This
left hand drive limited edition Beetle is a true collectors vehicle and not to
be missed. Having belonged to Howard too, adds some important historical
pedigree.
A
fitting tribute about Howard Cheese from Kate Ellis, MBBR Magazine Editor:
“Chairman
and Founder of the Mexican Brazilian Beetle Register, Ludlovian and true
Shropshire Lad, local historian and campaigner, churchwarden, and importantly,
part of my Beetling family.’
