2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4.0 (WJ)
No
Reserve
Uncommonly smart example from a deceased estate sale
showing just 74,500 miles; well spec'd example with 10 service
stamps
Supplied new by Murray Chrysler Jeep of
Glasgow in September 2001 this smart 2nd Generation WJ series Jeep
Grand Cherokee comes to us in desirable Limited spec with the popular 4.0 AMC
242 straight-six engine which develops 197Bhp and 312NM of torque driving all
four wheels via Jeep’s then new Quadra-drive ** (further interesting information
on this system below) with Vari-Lok differentials and four-speed 42RE automatic
transmission which gave this generation of Grand Cherokee surprising, and
enviable off-road capability and prowess.
Finished in black and sat upon
its original 16inch alloy wheels the car looks purposeful, stylish and
proportionally neat - uncommon for an SUV of this era?
Inside, we find
the typical high, luxurious spec of the top of the range ‘Limited’ model
including a premium 180-watt Infinity Gold stereo system with 6 speakers,
leather seating surfaces, electric 6-way adjustable heated front seats, leather
steering wheel, cruise control, digital climate control with A/C, steering wheel
with volume controls, wood affect trim, memory seat for the driver, trip
computer, cruise control, as well as a full-sized spare wheel and tyre, security
system, color-coded keyless entry remotes and body colour side mouldings and
bumpers.
This rather smart example comes to us from a deceased
estate. The owner was a retired Land Rover technician and loved to look after
his cars. The V5C shows just 3 former keepers to our owner of 6 years. We also
find the owner’s pack and service book revealing 10 stamps all by Jeep/Chrysler
dealers, the last in July 2013 at 54,262 miles, an invoice for a more recent
service in September 2021 at 74,314 miles costing £132 by John Snape Motors Ltd
of Solihul, but a few miles ago, the odometer reading just 74,751 miles
following a 140 mile trip up to Brightwells without a hitch and current MOT
valid until September 2022 with 4 minor advisories recorded (check online by
visiting check-mot.service.gov.uk and enter the reg).
A lovely example
ready to be enjoyed and potentially ideal for the coming winter weather,
particuarly as its on offer at No Reserve, so the highest bid takes it
home.

** A notable feature available in this generation
was the automatic four wheel drive option called Quadra-Drive, which employed the New
Venture Gear NV247 transfer case. This two-speed chain-driven transfer case uses
a gerotor, a clutch pack coupled to a hydraulic pump, to transfer torque between
the front and rear axles. The transfer case contains three modes, 4-All Time,
Neutral, and 4-Lo. In 4-All Time, 100% of torque is sent to the rear axle in
normal conditions. If the rear axle starts spinning at a higher rate than the
front axle, hydraulic pressure builds up in the gerotor and causes the clutch
pack to progressively transfer torque to the front axle until both axles return
to the same speed. Neutral mode is intended for towing the vehicle. In 4-Lo, the
front and rear axles are locked together through a 2.72 reduction gear ratio.
The NV247 transfer case is mated to front and rear axles containing Jeep's
Vari-Lok differentials. Vari-Lok differentials also use a gerotor to transfer
torque between the wheels on either side of the axle. The major advantage of
Quadra-Drive was that the combined transfer case and progressive locking
differentials in each axle could automatically control traction between all four
wheels. However, only the center differential could be permanently locked, and
only in 4Lo. The Quadra-Trac
II system included the NV247 transfer case with the
standard open front and rear
differentials.
