Description
1955 MG Magnette ZA
One family ownership from
new with low mileage; restored in the mid-1990s; unleaded head; new tyres;
recently serviced
The
Magnette was manufactured in two build series, the ZA and ZB of 1953 through to
1958 using a modified Wolseley body and an Austin engine. Launched
in 1953, the ZA Magnette, styled by Gerald Palmer was upgraded as the ZB in 1956
which was in production until 1958. The MG Magnette was a milestone in Abingdon,
as it was the first mono-construction MG, it was also one of the fastest saloons
in its class.
The vendor believes that
his uncle owned this ZA from new and can trace documentation back to
1961. It was his daily use car for many years but was taken off the road at some
point and a complete restoration carried out by him and a friend at Beasley's
Garage in Witton Birmingham following his retirement around 1993-1995.
During this time it was completely stripped and refurbished and the
cylinder head was converted to use unleaded fuel. The leather, woodwork and
carpets were replaced or reconditioned and the car was
repainted.
Since the vendor has had the car, he
has had much of the braking system overhauled. It had new wheel cylinders and brake
shoes at this point. The carburettors have been reconditioned and
balanced using genuine parts. The battery is relatively new and four
new tyres were put on in 2020.
More recently minor work has
included; a new thermostat, oil, filters, plugs, points, condenser etc. The fuel
pump has been changed to a modern electronic type rather than the original SU
mechanical pump. The indicated mileage of 71,090 is believed to be
correct.
