Possibly not at the top of everyone's Google Search list,
the SIDEA (Ste Industrielle des Automobile) was made in modest numbers
in Mezieres-Charleville in the Ardennes region of France using available
components assembled into quality light cars from 1912 until 1924.
It
took the company four years after the end of WW1 before producton recommenced,
the company changing its name in 1923 to SIDEA Juffret.
By this time they
were using Fivet engines for their sidevalve model and a 1,690cc S.C.A.P unit
for their overhead cam model - as fitted to this example here.
S.C.A.P
had built an enviable reputation during the war, supplying engines for fighter
aircraft and offered at least 17 different varieties of proprietary engine
available to the multitude of small French manufacturers that existed at the
time.
The soon to be massed-produced Citroens were to scupper SIDEA
Juffret's long term plans, so it is super to find this rare survivor, and in
such original, yet usable condition.
It was imported into the UK in 2020
and registered BF 9302, having been discovered in Bordeaux. There are a couple
of invoices for tyres from Longstone in 2021 and a recent bill for £1,965
for work to the propshaft, fitting of hood frame and hood bag (although there is
no actual hood material within) and general fettling.
The car has been
running and driving onsite, is in remarkably preserved order and with much
original upholstery too....the driver's seat squab has been recovered, but one
hardly notices and it all works very well together.
Sure to create much
interest wherever it goes, it is on offer for the price of an Austin Chummy and
offers so much more in the way of space and rarity. An ideal machine for the
VSCC Light Car Section, it is RHD and even comes with a right hand throttle for
those of a nervous disposition....
