Body-off
restoration in 2015 and only 3,500 miles since; 2.6 straight-six petrol engine;
stainless steel exhaust; very smart all round
First registered in Leicestershire in April 1972, this Land Rover
S3 was acquired by a previous owner in 2014 as a non-runner which had been off
the road for around 20 years. Over the next year or so he treated it to a
body-off restoration as detailed in notes and invoices on
file.
The chassis was repaired as required
including new dumb irons and a new rear cross member. The bulkhead was removed
and repaired and new footwells welded in. All the body panels were removed and
repaired, including new door bottoms on both sides. The whole body
was stripped to bare metal and repainted in Marine Blue.
The windscreen frame and tailgate fittings
etc. were all shot blasted and hot dip galvanised. It also received a new front
bumper and new door, window, tailgate and roof seals. The exterior lights and
indicators were also renewed.
On the inside it
was treated to a new set of deluxe seats. A new black canvas hood was supplied
by Exmoor Trim and new roof hoops fitted. A new set of Avon tyres were fitted
and the wheels refurbished and repainted in Limestone beige. New rear mudflaps
were also fitted.
On the mechanical side, the
cylinder head was removed and rebuilt with new valves, guide seals, head gasket
etc. The carb was rebuilt and the 2.6 six-cylinder petrol engine was treated to
a full service. The brakes were overhauled as required with new hoses, copper
pipes, cylinders, seals etc.
Back on the road
by April 2015, it flew through its next three MOTs with no advisories recorded
and is, of course, now MOT-exempt and free to tax.
Our vendor, a member of the LROC, acquired the truck in 2020 and
has continued to look after it well, including fitting a new stainless steel
exhaust system in 2021 which cost £350. He reports that it runs and drives well
with a smooth and quiet straight-six engine. It has certainly been starting
promptly and running well as we have moved it around on
site.
A very tidy S3 all round, with many new
parts fitted, it has only covered some 3,500 miles since the restoration was
completed and no doubt has another 50+ years of useful life ahead of
it.
