Super old
Conquest driven 100 miles to the sale; four owners from new; only 36,800
miles indicated and likely to be correct; runs sweetly
Launched in
1953 to replace the Consort, the upmarket Daimler Conquest was a modified
version of the Lanchester 14 fitted with a six-cylinder 75bhp 2,433cc engine
mated to Daimler’s super-smooth four-speed pre-selector gearbox. It came in
three body styles, saloon, roadster or drophead coupe. All had well-appointed
traditional wood and leather interiors. Around 4,568 were sold before production
came to an end in 1957.
First registered in Doncaster in May 1954, this
Conquest comes with a buff logbook which shows that it has had just four owners
from new, the first of them being a local aircraft pilot, so we are told by the
vendor who knew most of them.
An old service invoice shows that it had
covered 26,188 miles by 1967 and there are 37 old MOTs from 1961 – 2005 which
show that it has always been in light, regular use. Early MOTs did not record
mileages but we can see that it rises very slowly from 27,282 in 1969 to 34,781
in 2005 so the current mileage of 36,835 is almost certainly correct.
Old tax discs show that it was
taxed every year from 1999 – 2012 and the MOT history online shows that it has
only covered some 2,000 miles since 2006.
Our vendor acquired the car in
2020 from a friend who had owned it for several years and he has
continued to look after it well, keeping it tucked up in a nice dry barn when
not in use.
Other documentation includes a copy of an original Daimler
maintenance manual for the fluid flywheel gearbox, Lucas wiring diagrams,
workshop manual on CD, technical literature relating to the Conquest, plus
historic magazine features and road tests.
As you can see in the photos,
this charming low-mileage Daimler looks nicely preserved with a super original
blue leather interior that hides its 70 years remarkably well. An afternoon
spent with some hide food and leather dye should restore the colour beautifully.
Driven 100 miles to the sale, it has been starting promptly and running
very sweetly and quietly as we have moved it around on site.
