It's lovely
to find a car with a comprehensive early history and this lovely Chummy
certainly has one of those.
A leather-bound book has hand-written notes
from day one, showing it was supplied by Blakes to a Mr Timms with a speedo
reading of 155 miles. Every mile was subsequently accounted for. We know that on
the 8th April 1927 it had a drop of oil in the magneto, for example!!
A
1926 build, the car wasn't registered until the end of March 1927 and features
some cross-over items such as an early-style three-piece bonnet and larger
7" brakes (probably a good thing!).
Mr Timms sold it in 1946, the car
having been laid up during the War, with 49,032 miles under its wheels. It
passed to Mr Lewis and then, 'on or about 17th July 1947', Mr Martin
purchased it. He carried on the detailed listing until 1951.
An old style
V5 shows it was in Mr Bateman's hands in 1978 - an undated receipt in the log
showing he bought it for 1 Shilling (5p), although this was signed by Mr Timms
(its original owner?) so maybe the previous two drivers were simply lent the
car.
Mrs Lewis acquired it in 1984 passing the car to her son in 2005 as
far as we can make out. A new owner, Mr Williams, then took hold of it and
restored it, a photo on file of the owner taking an elderly gentleman for a
drive referring to him as Gordon - most likely Mr Timms getting a trip down
memory lane.
It was restored well and without regard to expense, with
over £6,000 spent on the body restoration alone, plus nearly £2,000 on trim by
Bryan Purves and everything else between - all listed out by cost and date. The
Austineers also rebuilt the engine, fitting a Phoenix crankshaft.
It has
a VSCC buff form (non transferable to the new owner) plus a nice garage
lubrication chart. There are copy parts books on file too.
A full set of
weather equipment and original tools are included to add to the picture. This
is a super little car with one of the best histories we have seen. If you
are in the market for a Chummy, this little treasure is worth close
inspection.
